Today we’re going to talk some more about milling and a machine that enables us to perform some very complex processes: the 5-axis milling machine.
We use this machine for a variety of tasks: for instance, after we have produced pieces from our mould by coining or cutting, we use this special milling machine to make holes, grooves, hinges and other details.
As we mentioned in our previous newsletter, every stage of production is carried out in our workshop (if you missed the article, you can find it on our blog): for example, we use our 5-axis milling machine to finish off a front we have already cut and coined.
It is a very handy machine if parts have to be moved and undergo different processes: with the 5-axis milling machine we don’t have to change the position of the part (which can jeopardise accuracy) because once it has been fixed into place, the machine rotates it for each of the machining stages and you never have to remove it or change its position.
One of its main benefits is its extreme accuracy, as it requires less clamping of the part than traditional 3- or 4-axis milling machines. Thanks to the greater number of axes which are controlled simultaneously, we can work on every side of the part at the same time but just need to clamp it once.
The two main stages of 5-axis machining are complex but fundamental:
• creating the programme: our Technical Department and toolmakers pool their experience and professional expertise to turn the 3D drawing of the finished part into a programme which they then load into the machine;
• designing the clamping equipment: we produce the equipment in our own workshop, thanks to the great skill of our mechanics.
